Dr. Costly Aderigbe, a distinguished medical professional hailing from Nigeria, has been instrumental in disseminating Empowerment Self Defense (ESD) knowledge among adolescent girls in her immediate community and throughout Nigeria.
In addition to her medical expertise, Dr. Aderigbe is the esteemed founder and Executive Director of the 'Value Female Network,' an organization committed to combating the grave issue of female genital mutilation while striving to restore hope and dignity to survivors. The Value Female Network is also renowned for hosting the annual Adolescent Bootcamp, a significant event gathering girls and young women in the south-west region of Nigeria.
While Dr. Aderigbe seldom takes on the role of an ESD instructor herself, she facilitates training sessions by inviting accomplished ESD instructors from Nigeria to impart valuable skills to girls and young women at her annual Adolescent Bootcamp.
Her journey with ESD began in 2020, leading her to enlist the expertise of Obi Onyeigwe and Adanma Nwokoma to train five volunteers from her organization in October 2020. Subsequently, in December 2020, Adanma Nwokoma conducted a training session for about 200 girls at the ABC2020.
In 2022, Dr. Aderigbe expanded the reach of ESD knowledge by having Lawrita Agbor train approximately 600 girls at the ABC2022. In September 2023, Adanma Nwokoma conducted a comprehensive training program, impacting 711 individuals, including 11 volunteers and 500 girls in person, with an additional 200 girls receiving training online at the ABC2023. This brings the total number of individuals directly impacted by the knowledge of Empowerment Self Defense through her organization to an impressive 1,516 persons.
Dr. Costly Aderigbe exemplifies the role of a catalyst, enabling the dissemination of ESD knowledge to others even without directly conducting the training sessions. Let us take a moment to celebrate her remarkable contributions to the community and the cause.
